A GIF plays on its own, loops forever and works where video does not. It is also an old format: 256 colours, no sound, and files far larger than the same clip as a video. Keeping it short and small is most of the skill.
Keeping a GIF small
Length, width and frame rate decide the size. Stay under about six seconds, around 480 pixels wide, at 10 to 15 frames a second. Halving the width cuts the file to about a quarter.
Clips with little movement and flat colour stay small. Grain, confetti and camera shake do not.
When a video is better
Where a short MP4 will play, use it instead: it is far smaller and looks better. Keep the GIF for places that will not autoplay a video.
Questions
Can a GIF have sound?
No. A "GIF with sound" from a sharing site is really a short MP4 or WEBM.
Is there a watermark?
No, and there is nothing to sign up for.
