What is iHateFiles?

iHateFiles is a free online file converter for images, video and audio that runs entirely in your web browser. Files are converted on your own device and are never uploaded to a server, so there is no account, no watermark and no file size limit. It handles 63 formats and 975 conversions, including HEIC to JPG, PNG to WEBP, MOV to MP4 and MP4 to MP3, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

How it works

Choose a file, choose what you want it to become, and press convert. The work happens in this page: images go through your browser's own decoders and a set of encoders written for this site, while video and audio go through FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, the same FFmpeg desktop tools use, running in the tab.

Questions

Is iHateFiles free?

Yes, completely, with no account and no limits. Your own device does the converting, so there is no server bill to pass on to you and no reason to meter it.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. There is no upload endpoint on this site. Your browser reads the file, converts it in the page, and hands it back. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit. The ceiling is your own machine's memory, so a large video will be slower on a phone than on a laptop, but nothing is rejected for being too big.

What can it convert?

Images, video and audio between every common format: JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, TIFF, MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI, MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OPUS and many more, in any combination.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Everything runs in a mobile browser too. Images are quick; long videos take noticeably longer than on a laptop because the work is being done by the phone.

How is this different from other converters?

Other converters send your file to a server, convert it there and send it back, which is why they have size limits, queues and daily caps. This one does the work on your device, so it has none of those, and your file never leaves your machine.
