JPG is the format forms and old software actually accept. If an upload has been refused, or a picture will not open, a JPG is usually the way through. It suits photographs and anything with soft gradients, and it keeps files small.

What JPG cannot do

It has no transparency, so a clear background on a PNG or WEBP is filled with white. It is also a poor fit for screenshots, logos and text, where its compression leaves a haze around sharp edges. Those are better as PNG.

JPG, JPEG: is there a difference?

None. They are two spellings of one format, from when Windows file names were limited to three letters. Renaming one to the other changes nothing inside the file.

Need a certain file size?

Application forms often set a limit in KB. Compress to a size hits the number for you.
