MP3 is the format that plays on everything, from a car stereo to a ten-year-old phone. It is not the most efficient audio format any more, but when a file has to just work, nothing has wider support.

Choosing a bitrate

128 kbps is fine for speech, a podcast or a voice memo, at about 1 MB a minute. 192 kbps suits most music. 320 kbps is as far as MP3 goes, at about 2.4 MB a minute.

A higher bitrate cannot improve a source that was already low quality. Converting a 128 kbps file at 320 makes it bigger and no better.

From a video

To keep only the sound of a video, use Extract Audio or one of the conversions listed below. The picture is discarded and the soundtrack is saved as MP3.

Into a video

Going the other way, MP3 to MP4 puts a song or a podcast on screen with a picture of your choice, for sites that only take video. It is listed below with the other conversions.

Questions

Is this MP3 converter free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit on how many files you convert.

Can it convert a YouTube link?

No. It converts files already on your device, and only those. Nothing here downloads from other sites.

Is MP3 worse than M4A?

At the same bitrate M4A usually sounds a little better. MP3 still wins on where it will play.
