Last updated

PNG is the format for anything with sharp edges or a see-through background: screenshots, logos, diagrams and cutouts. It is lossless, so what goes in is exactly what comes out, and it opens in every editor and app.

Why the file gets bigger

Turning a JPG or WEBP photo into a PNG usually makes it several times larger, because PNG stores every pixel exactly, including any damage the earlier compression left. It does not bring lost quality back, and it stops further loss from here on.

Transparency

A transparent WEBP, AVIF or SVG keeps its transparency as a PNG. A JPG has none to keep: to clear its background, use Remove Image Background instead.

Questions

Does converting to PNG improve quality?

No. It preserves what is there. Detail lost by earlier compression stays lost.

Is there a limit on how many I can convert?

No. Everything runs on your device.
