WAV is plain, uncompressed sound. People convert to it because something demands it: an audio editor, a sampler, a transcription service, a phone system. It is simple, and everything that works with audio can read it.
Expect a much larger file
CD-quality WAV takes about 10 MB a minute, roughly ten times a 128 kbps MP3. A three-minute song comes to around 30 MB.
It will not sound better
Converting an MP3 or M4A to WAV keeps the sound as it is and stops it getting worse in the next edit. What the lossy format threw away does not come back.
Sharing a WAV as a video
A WAV is too big to pass around and video sites will not take one. WAV to MP4, listed below, makes a far smaller video with a picture of your choice and compressed sound.
Questions
Why convert to WAV at all?
Because the next step needs it. Editors and samplers want it, and each save in a lossy format would lose a little more.
Is WAV lossless?
Yes. It stores the sound uncompressed, usually as 16-bit PCM.
