How to make a karaoke track from any song

Remove the vocals from a song to get a backing track for karaoke or practice. How it works, what to expect, and how to get the cleanest result.

Last updated

In short: Use the Vocal Remover: it separates a song into the voice and everything else using a neural network that runs in your browser. Keep the instrumental as your karaoke track. It is free, unlimited, and the song is never uploaded.

How vocal removal works now

Older tricks cancelled whatever was in the centre of a stereo mix, which also took out the bass and kick drum. Current separation models have learned what a voice sounds like and pull it out wherever it sits, leaving the rest largely intact.

What to expect

On most pop and rock songs the instrumental is good enough to sing over. A faint trace of the vocal may remain in loud choruses, and heavy reverb on the voice is the hardest thing to remove.

Getting the best result

Start from the best copy you have: a FLAC or high-bitrate MP3 separates more cleanly than a low-bitrate one.

To change the key for your voice, find the song's key first with the key finder.

Want the drums or bass on their own?

Split Into Stems separates vocals, drums, bass and everything else, which is useful for practising along with one instrument missing.

Questions

Is the vocal remover free?

Yes, with no limit on songs or length. It runs on your own device.
