Quick answer: To convert SRT to VTT, add the .srt file to this page and press Convert. The timestamps are rewritten in WebVTT format and a .vtt file is saved to your device. It runs in your browser, free, with nothing uploaded.

What changes between SRT and VTT

Very little, which is why the conversion is exact. WebVTT adds a WEBVTT header line and writes timestamps with a full stop before the milliseconds (00:01:02.500) where SRT uses a comma (00:01:02,500). The text of every line is carried across unchanged.

Why you need VTT

The HTML <track> element only accepts WebVTT, so any subtitles on a web page, in a custom video player or in most e-learning platforms have to be VTT. SRT remains the format TVs, media players and editors expect.

Out of sync as well?

The same page can shift every line earlier or later by up to 30 seconds, so a file that runs a couple of seconds late can be converted and corrected in one step.

Questions

Will converting SRT to VTT change the text?

No. Only the header and the timestamp punctuation change.

Does it keep italics?

Tags such as <i> are carried over as they are; both formats understand them.

Is it free?

Yes, free and unlimited, and the file never leaves your device.
