What Normalise Loudness is for
For a recording that is too quiet, too loud, or wildly inconsistent between speakers. Every platform publishes a loudness target and quietly adjusts anything that misses it.
Worth knowing
A volume control multiplies every sample by the same number, which makes a quiet track louder and a loud one clip. This measures how loud the material actually sounds and moves it to the target.

Questions
What is LUFS?
A measure of how loud something actually sounds to a listener, rather than how large the peaks are. It is why two tracks with identical peak levels can be obviously different in volume.
Which target should I use?
−14 LUFS for music on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube. −16 for podcasts. −23 for European broadcast. The platform will adjust you to its own figure anyway, so hitting it yourself keeps control of how.
Is this the same as turning the volume up?
No. A volume control multiplies every sample by the same number, which makes quiet parts louder and clips loud ones. This measures the perceived loudness of the whole recording and moves it, protecting the peaks.
Why does it run twice?
The first pass measures, the second corrects using those measurements. A single pass has to guess, and guesses badly on anything with a quiet opening.
