What Remove Silence is for
Recordings are mostly waiting: the pause before you start, the gap while you find the next thought, the dead air at the end. Cutting it makes a recording noticeably tighter without touching a single word.

Questions
Will it cut into my speech?
Two settings decide that. The threshold sets how quiet counts as silence, and the minimum length stops it touching anything shorter, so natural pauses between words survive. If it is clipping soft speech, use a lower threshold such as -60dB.
What threshold should I use?
Start at -50dB, which is about a quiet room. A noisier recording, with a fan or traffic behind it, needs -40dB or higher before the noise floor counts as silence at all.
Does it work on video?
Video files are accepted and the silent stretches are removed, though be aware the picture is cut along with the sound, so anything happening on screen during a silence goes too.
Can I get the gaps back?
Not from the output. Keep the original if the recording matters; this writes a new file and leaves yours alone, so the safe move is simply not to delete it.
