Last updated
A 1 MB limit trips up exactly two kinds of image: photographs from a modern phone or camera, and screenshots or scans saved as PNG. Both are easy to bring under it. A photo needs a small drop in JPG quality; a PNG usually needs converting to JPG, which on its own often cuts it by ninety percent.
Why phone photos are so big
A 48-megapixel phone photo is saved at very high quality so it can be edited later. For viewing, that extra data is invisible, and removing it gets you under 1 MB with a picture that looks the same.
iPhone HEIC photos
If the photo is HEIC, many upload forms will not take it at all, whatever its size. This page writes JPG, so it solves both problems at once.
