Compress an image to 200 KB

Reduce a photo to under 200 KB for an upload form, a marketplace listing or email, with as little visible loss as possible. Free, nothing uploaded.

200 KB is generous for a single image. Most photographs fit it at their full width with only a modest quality reduction, so this is usually a limit you can meet without anyone noticing. This page finds the best quality that fits and only reduces the size if a very large photo demands it.

Typical sources and how they fare

A phone photo (3 to 5 MB) fits at full width with quality around 70 to 80.

A screenshot usually fits without trouble, but may come out smaller and sharper as PNG; try Compress Image with PNG if text looks soft.

A scan at 300 dpi usually has to come down in size a little.

Questions

Will a 200 KB photo look worse than the original?

Side by side on a big screen, a trained eye might tell. In a listing or an email, almost nobody can. Use Compare Two Images afterwards if you want a measured answer.
