Remove Image Background

Cut the subject out of a photo and keep the transparency.

Cut the subject out of a photo and keep the transparency. Free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no upload: it all runs in your browser.

What Remove Image Background is for

For a subject that needs to leave its surroundings: a product on white, a portrait for a pass photo, a cutout for a slide. A segmentation model does the selection that would otherwise be half an hour with a lasso tool.

Worth knowing

Runs a segmentation model in this tab. It is about 84 MB, downloaded once and then cached, and it uses your graphics card where the browser allows it. Your picture is never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Add your files. Drop them on the page or choose them. They stay on your device.
  2. Set the output format and quality. The defaults suit most files.
  3. Press convert and save the results, individually or as one ZIP.

Questions

How does it know what the subject is?

A neural network trained to find the salient object in a picture. It runs in this tab, downloaded once and cached, so the photograph is never uploaded anywhere.

What kind of photos work best?

A clear subject against a background it contrasts with. Busy scenes, several possible subjects, or a subject the same colour as what is behind it all make the edge less certain.

There is a faint halo around the edge. Can I fix it?

Raise the edge firmness, which trades a little softness for a harder boundary. Lower it when the subject has fine hair or fur, where the softness is what makes it look real.

Which format should I save as?

PNG or WEBP. JPG cannot store transparency, so a cutout saved as JPG comes back with a solid background.
