Questions
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. The streams are copied rather than re-encoded, so every part is bit-for-bit the footage you started with. It is also why a two-hour recording splits in seconds.
Why are the parts not exactly the length I asked for?
Because each one has to begin on a keyframe. Video is stored as occasional complete frames with the differences between them in between, so a cut anywhere else would start a part with no picture to build on. The cuts land on the nearest keyframe, usually within a second or two of where you asked.
Can I get exact cuts?
Use Trim Video with the frame-accurate setting, which re-encodes and therefore can cut anywhere. That is slower and costs a generation of quality, which is the trade.
Do the parts play on their own?
Yes. Each one has its timestamps reset to zero, so players treat it as a file in its own right rather than a fragment that begins an hour in.
