What Restore Old Video is for
For footage from before digital cameras settled down: MiniDV tapes, DVD rips and old camcorder files, which show comb-shaped tearing on movement and grain in every shadow.
Worth knowing
Each repair is off unless it is needed. Applying a filter to footage that does not need it only softens the picture.
How to use it
- Add your files. Drop them on the page or choose them. They stay on your device.
- Set the output format and quality. The defaults suit most files.
- Press convert and save the results, individually or as one ZIP.
Questions
What is that comb effect on movement?
Interlacing. Older video recorded half the lines at a time, thirty times a second, and a computer draws both halves at once. Deinterlacing recombines them into whole frames.
Should I use the noise reduction?
Only if the grain is genuinely distracting. It works by averaging across the picture, so it always costs some fine detail, and on clean footage it costs detail for no gain.
Can it fix a shaky camera?
It can steady moderate handheld shake. Violent movement cannot be recovered, because the frames themselves are motion-blurred.
Will restoring make old footage look modern?
No. It removes the artefacts of how the video was stored; it cannot add detail the tape never held. Expect a clean version of the original, not a better one.
