For seeing a whole recording at a glance instead of scrubbing it: finding the take you want in an hour of footage, checking what is on an unlabelled file, or attaching a summary to a report.
Worth knowing
Scrubbing a long recording to find one moment is slow. A grid of evenly spaced frames, each labelled with its time, turns that into looking.

Questions
How many frames should the grid have?
Four by five, twenty frames, suits most clips. A long recording justifies more; a short one looks repetitive with too many.
Are the frames evenly spaced?
Yes, across the whole running time, so the sheet represents the entire video rather than the opening of it.
What are the timestamps for?
So you can go straight to the moment you spotted. Each cell is labelled with its own position in the clip.
JPG or PNG for the sheet?
JPG, for anything with many cells: a twenty-frame PNG sheet is several megabytes where the JPG is a few hundred kilobytes and looks the same.
