What Video Converter is for
For when a clip will not play: an old AVI, a WMV from a Windows machine, an MKV a television refuses, or a browser recording in WEBM that an editor will not import. MP4 is the answer to almost all of it.
How to use it
- Add your files. Drop them on the page or choose them. They stay on your device.
- Set the output format and quality. The defaults suit most files.
- Press convert and save the results, individually or as one ZIP.
Questions
Which video format plays on everything?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. It has hardware decoding on effectively every phone, television and computer made in the last fifteen years, which no other format can claim.
How long can the video be?
There is no limit imposed here. The ceiling is your own machine's memory, and a long file will take real time because the work happens on your device rather than a server farm.
Why is converting video slower than converting images?
A one-minute clip is around 1,800 separate pictures, each of which has to be decoded and re-encoded, and the encoder also has to work out what changed between them. Images are one frame.
Will I lose quality?
Re-encoding always costs a little, because the encoder is working from an already compressed source. Choosing a higher quality preset keeps it invisible at the cost of a larger file.
