Resize a signature for a PAN card

Resize your signature for a PAN application: JPG at 2 × 4.5 cm and 200 DPI, under 10 KB. Nothing is cropped off and nothing is uploaded.

Last updated

The signature on a PAN application is the smallest file in the set. Protean's Form 49A instructions ask for a 2 × 4.5 cm colour JPEG at 200 DPI, maximum 10 KB. This page fits your signature into that shape on a white background, without cutting any of it off, and compresses it under the limit.

Why a signature fits in so little

Plain white paper compresses to almost nothing, so nearly all of the 10 KB goes on the ink. That only holds if the paper really is white in the photo: a grey, shadowed background is recorded as detail, and detail is what makes a signature refuse to fit.

How to photograph it

Sign in dark ink on white paper, lay it flat in daylight, and hold the phone directly above so your own shadow is not on the page. Crop close around the signature before adding it here. A signature that fills the frame stays sharp at 354 × 157 pixels; a small one in a big photo turns to a smudge.

Which limit applies

As with the photo, Protean publishes two figures: 10 KB on its Form 49A instructions and 50 KB in a how-to article. Under 10 KB passes both.

Where these numbers come from

Questions

What size should a PAN card signature be?

On Protean's Form 49A instructions: 2 × 4.5 cm, 200 DPI, JPEG, maximum 10 KB. That works out to 354 × 157 pixels.

Will the edges of my signature be cut off?

No. It is fitted inside the shape with white around it, not cropped to fill it.
